The prospect of a 10th season of Smallville wasn’t immediately a welcome one. While the show had improved over the course of seasons eight and nine it felt like it was time for this show to end. Clark’s journey towards becoming Superman was spinning its wheels and story arcs felt like they were being reused over and over again. With the announcement of Season 10 being the final year, there was promise that the showrunners would be able to pull all the stops in chronicling Clark’s final chapter. For anyone who was expecting an epic, big budget, conclusion to the long running series, disappointment loomed. However, Smallville did deliver a strong final season that focused on the relationship between Lois and Clark while also highlighting the struggles of those around them.

The conclusion of “Lazarus” gave us our first peek at the season’s ‘big bad’

Of course, we didn’t expect to see Darkseid on screen fighting Clark every week. We understand the incredible budget constraints that the Smallville writing team has to work with. However, after that opening shot we did expect Darkseid and the New Gods to feel like more of an influential presence throughout the final season. Instead, we were given an episode every so often that featured one of Darkseid’s minions as a threat. These stories, while good, never did an adequate enough job of establishing Darkseid as a season long threat. In each of their attempts, Glorious Godfrey,

There was no excitement built for Darkseid’s appearance going into the finale beyond some hope that we’d get to see Clark fight him. It’s as if the writers’ room depended on the history that Superman has against Darkseid in the comic books to carry the viewers into the finale instead of establishing a personal struggle between this Clark and ‘the big grey one’ during the season. Never underestimate the importance of establishing some real animosity and hatred between the antagonist and hero. Season 9 did a great job of giving Clark a reason to fight Zod and despite any problems we have with

Darkseid wasn’t the only villain. Spinning off a story arc established last season, the United States government fought to register and unmask vigilantes in order to keep them under control. It’s a familiar storyline and a great idea but it also suffered from not giving the villain a face.

Despite all the problems with the villains of Season 10, there were still plenty of great reasons to watch. Standout episodes such as the 200th episode, “

At its core, Season 10 is about Clark taking his final steps towards becoming the Man of Steel. By his side, the unwavering Lois Lane supports him at every turn and her relationship with Clark is what holds the entire season together.

Long gone are the days of Clark Kent doubting who he really is on a weekly basis. He has his eye on the prize from the start of the season. While Darkseid’s storyline didn’t deliver like we had hoped, Smallville: Season 10 still provided plenty of good entertainment. At the heart of the story was Lois and Clark’s relationship as they both set out to take that important next step in their lives. The backbone of Smallville has always been the relationships that Clark has built. Whether that relationship be with his father or with Lex Luthor, Clark’s development into Superman has been defined over the course of ten years by those around him. Those relationships continued into Season 10 and gave the final chapter of Clark’s story a strong and exciting conclusion.

The conclusion of “Lazarus” gave us our first peek at the season’s ‘big bad’ Darkseid . Unfortunately, that was only one of a handful of peeks we would get of this big grey baddy. Maybe we should have expected it? Maybe we shouldn’t have gotten our hopes up for Darkseid playing a larger part in Season 10? The truth is, after that opening sneak peek, our expectations were high and rightfully so.Of course, we didn’t expect to see Darkseid on screen fighting Clark every week. In each of their attempts, Glorious Godfrey, Desaad and Granny Goodness failed to defeat Clark Kent and his friends, making the threat from Apokolips seem more like a trivial nuisance. Season 9 did a great job of giving Clark a reason to fight Zod and despite any problems we have with Doomsday , Davis Bloome was a smart decision. It gave Clark and his friends someone to interact with on a weekly basis. And while Doomsday turned out to be a disappointment, at least Bloome gave us a reason to give a damn about his storyline. There was nothing like that for Darkseid, despite having an opportunity to do so with his minions. If you extract the Darkseid story arc from Season 10, how much really changes?Darkseid wasn’t the only villain. Spinning off a story arc established last season, the United States government fought to register and unmask vigilantes in order to keep them under control. It’s a familiar storyline and a great idea but it also suffered from not giving the villain a face. Rick Flag and the Suicide Squad served that purpose to an extent but as the story progressed it was revealed that they were working against the government’s plan to register vigilantes as well. Slade Wilson emerged as another face of the VRA and arguably caused the most damage as he successfully killed off a long time DC hero.Despite all the problems with the villains of Season 10, there were still plenty of great reasons to watch. Standout episodes such as the 200th episode, ” Homecoming “, highlighted the rich history of Smallville and acted as an important reminder of how far Clark has come. There were plenty of guest appearances from DC’s finest. The return of Hawkman, Aquaman and Brainiac 5 were all reasons to tune in. Also the appearance of popular greats Booster Gold and Blue Beetle in Geoff Johns’ ” Booster ” were late season highlights. The unexpected return of Lionel Luthor gave the latter half of the season a decent villain for Clark to contend with while John Schneider returned as Jonathan Kent to provide some much needed words of wisdom when needed most. Meanwhile, if you were looking for Lex Luthor , you had to wait until the final hour of the season. At its core, Season 10 is about Clark taking his final steps towards becoming the Man of Steel. By his side, the unwavering Lois Lane supports him at every turn and her relationship with Clark is what holds the entire season together. Tom Welling and Erica Durance may not go down in history as the definitive Clark and Lois but they’ve done a great job in their respective roles. Tom Welling’s Clark Kent appears to be a lot more confident throughout this season. His return to a red and blue outfit at the start of the season shows that he’s willing to embrace his importance as a symbol.Long gone are the days of Clark Kent doubting who he really is on a weekly basis. He has his eye on the prize from the start of the season. The doubts he faces this season are primarily from external sources. Clark, along with the rest of us, has been trying to decipher Jor-El’s cryptic lessons with little success. Jor-El continued to be a thorn in Clark’s side this season, as he doubts his son right up until the series’ penultimate episode. He entombs the Superman suit in crystal as a prize for Clark to obtain. Unfortunately, it felt as if Jor-El was taunting the audience as well. Showing the viewers what they can’t have. With Martha busy and Chloe gone for the majority of the season, it was up to Lois Lane to ensure Clark kept his focus. Tough-as-nails Lane stood by her man; fighting alongside him against the VRA and Darkseid. Establishing that Lois knew Clark’s secret early on gave the series a different dynamic we hadn’t quite seen before. Having Clark finally tell Lois the truth allowed the two characters to immediately overcome many of the obstacles they had been facing, giving the writers a chance to grow beyond what we had seen with Lana Lang . Lois and Clark now stood on equal footing. The witty and always well written banter between the two improved and Lois became Clark’s shining light during his darkest hours. Take away all the disappointing villain story arcs and the relationship between Lois and Clark still make this season one of the best. Tess Mercer’s story arc was one of the biggest surprises this season. Establishing her relationship to the Luthor family created an entirely different spin on her character. Tess’ storyline had been frustrating to watch over the past couple of years as it seemed she was unsure whether or not she wanted to be a hero or a villain. This season she sides with Clark and the gang while also setting out on a few very insightful storylines of her own that bring a lot of depth to her character. Her relationship with young Alexander Luthor brought about a motherly instinct to the character that I didn’t quite expect. The surprise twist about Tess’ past developed into an interesting internal struggle that the character had to overcome. Oliver Queen’s relationship with Chloe evolved but other than that he didn’t develop much over the course of the year. His Omega Symbol story arc provided a little more for him at the end of the season, but for the most part, Ollie wasn’t given that much to do.While Darkseid’s storyline didn’t deliver like we had hoped, Smallville: Season 10 still provided plenty of good entertainment.

[NEW] Smallville: Tom Welling Series Renewed for Season 10 | smallville season 10 – POLLICELEE

SmallvilleFans of the young man from Kansas and Krypton can rest easy. The CW TV series Smallville has been renewed for a 10th season.

Smallville follows the exploits of young Clark Kent (Tom Welling) in his days prior to slipping on blue tights and red shorts. The current cast includes Welling, Allison Mack, Callum Blue, Cassidy Freeman, Erica Durance, and Justin Hartley.

The series moved to Friday nights this season and, while viewership is understandably down, it’s improved the CW network’s performance on that little-watched night.

According to the network, Smallville has increased the averages by 67% among adults 18-34 (1.5 rating), 200% in men 18-34 (1.8 rating), 75% in adults 18-49 (1.4 rating), 183% in men 18-49 (1.7 rating) and 74% in total viewers (3.12 million).

Are you glad that Smallville’s been renewed?

Yes! Absolutely!
No. Time for it to go!

Though the show’s strong suit isn’t the CW network’s targeted demographic of young women, the renewal was expected — especially in light of the rest of the network’s schedule. There’s no word yet if season 10 will be the show’s last.

Smallville joins previously renewed The Vampire Diaries, Gossip Girl, 90210, Supernatural, and America’s Next Top Model.

The CW shows whose fate are still up in the air are One Tree Hill, Melrose Place, and Life Unexpected. Of the three, One Tree Hill seems to have the best chance for survival. Life Unexpected started decently but has been dropping. Meanwhile, Melrose Place is considered to be essentially dead.

What do you think? Are you glad that Smallville is returning or is it time for the series to end?
